Another opportunity to celebrate everything Turbo

An update on the DHF fundraising evening. It was unfortunate the weather didn’t play ball with the planned aquathlons – but we thought it prudent to follow the DoE guidelines. This didn’t lessen the organisation on the logistics & bbq & winter series prizes. A big thank you to Jon, Brett, Richie, Malcolm, Rosie, Daisy, Helen, Ash, Cheryl, Dan, Ralph & Jonathan – but particularly to James Drake for ensuring we had all the pieces of the jigsaw in place & making it happen.

Thanks, too, to you all for your support, after costs have been deducted, we’re likely to have raised close to £1,000 for https://dylanhowellsfoundation.org/ (and got the whole club together for a social).

It was also the occasion we used to recognise the winter series winners and celebrate notable performances. Congratulations to the various junior series winners - William, Eleanor, Freddie, Abigail M, Tom, Imogen, Liam, Nina, Alex & Claudia and additionally coaches’ award winners Georgie, Erik, Abigail S, Isabel, Luke, Poppy, Daisy & Amelie; and on the senior side, Teresa, James, Paul, Rob & Denis.

For those disappointed not to race the DHF reverse aquathlon as team discount has been arranged at the Phoenix Tri event next Friday night (10th July), event starting from 6:30pm, senior race start around 7:30pm ~ 500m swim/5KM run - @ Guildford Lido, bringing the entry down to just £15. There’s also the option of cycling to the event to make it a triathlon. The discount code & entry link are on Spond.

After a positive response for bike handling skill workshops and previous requests for bike maintenance sessions we will be hosting an event on the Sun 2nd Aug.

Two more Turbo social dates to mark your cards.

Julian Ward is again hosting the Ham Lake Relays on Friday 17th July (a 3-man handicap race) and social afterwards. Invite on Spond – pdf details attached.

Then on Sunday 19th we have another Isle of Wight Randonee. The easiest option is to drive to Portsmouth and catch the ferry across – but some will be cycling to Portsmouth from Farnham to add extra mileage. Again, all details on Spond.

Again we’ve had another smattering of Turbo doing exceptional things.

We’ve had John Taylor, ahem nearing his 70th year, join the Fireflies cycling tour of northern Italy. Over the 8 days, he averaged nigh on 150km with over 2,000m of climbing a day (and I trust, refuelled appropriately). But that was his way of warming up for Roth.

It rather shades Duncan’s admirable 10 day LEJOG, Izzy’s solo London-Paris adventure and even Angelo’s 120km 25-hour effort taking in 6km of climbing AND DESCENTS (the doorbell footage has to be viewed https://www.instagram.com/angbella83/reel/DaLuuI3omyEQZW0WfH-EMY5__--aNbR8SsOikA0/)

Huge congratulations to Chloe, who won the Jersey Triathlon outright last weekend and to Rob, Stewart & Teresa on their Dambuster efforts.

In Westfriesland, Tom & Felix performed admirably, Rosie came 2nd in her 30-34 age category and a fabulous 8th woman overall. There was immense satisfaction in Katie’s accomplished result (12/133 AG, 33/447 women) in her first 70.3 – a far cry for the non-cyclist, novice swimmer 2 years ago, who only joined the club for the company, when she’d been told she may never run again.

But this is the perfect reminder of Paul Kaye’s “the why”. What is your motivation for getting up at 5am to cycle, heading out for a 20-mile run in the freezing rain, staying to 10pm on a Tuesday and finishing that final 8 length set? Where is that inner strength that will help you through the dark & difficult moments coming from?

Taking on an enormous challenge to make somebody else proud is an incredibly strong motivator – and Gabbie’s reel encapsulated her why. https://www.instagram.com/p/DaOEVLEh2hc4wFaNs0B3r_eU97GuigkbEB4mZc0/

She is one of the Turbos taking part in Ironman Copenhagen & https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/everysteptogether

This weekend, we have Chris Shone continuing his big swim series in Wales, with Pier & Alan seeking London League points at the Bridge Triathlon.

But most eyes we turn to Roth, with Ian, Jonny, Rob, James, Chuck, Ben, Maria, Steve, Paul, Dmitrij, Alex, Jess, Caz, Dave & Sam competing as individuals, with Nicole, Becky, Lexie, John, Sarah, Richard, Stewart, Gabbie, Lara & Lindsay comprising relay teams.

It promises to be another unforgettable Turbo experience.
