Thames Turbo Sprint Triathlon, Training Schedule

Sprint race

Once again Steve Robinson and his team put on a superbly well received triathlon on Monday, with over 280 finishers; 190 competing in the event for the first time, half of whom were completing their first ever triathlon. It’s a massive credit to the club how well organised, how helpful & supportive we’re seen to be. So a huge thank you to all those who signed up to marshal this year and contributed to the event’s success. There are a couple of reels which offer a flavour of the day.

Amongst the Turbos racing, Atharv produced the fastest run of the day (in a surprise to no-one) to finish 4th overall, followed by Ryan (feeling the effects of the cold & having raced on Sunday) and Ian, whilst Jess finished 2nd overall in the women’s field. Holger was doing his first triathlon in the UK and gave heartening positive feedback on how we compared with events back in his native Germany, whilst Rob Hillson reaped the rewards of his dedication to finish his first triathlon comfortably in the top half of the field. Atharv 01:01, Ryan 01:02 Ian 01:02, Thomas 01:04, Gordon 01:05, Jess 01:07, Charles 01:09, Alec 01:14, Holger 01:18, Rob 01:22, Lexie 01:23. The full results are here.

Changes to the summer Turbo schedule

Strength and Conditioning session

As we communicated previously, we are starting a new S&C session, via Zoom on Sunday evenings at 18:30, starting on 1st June. Ralph will take the session for those who can join at the time, but also record the session for anyone to follow in their own time. The link to each week’s session will be posted in the announcements in Spond.

Monday nights

Now we are back to light evenings, we’ve listened to your preference to get outside, rather than having a coached Turbo session. Nick had periodised the sessions ready for the first big opening race of the season in Mallorca; hence the final Turbo session will be 19th May, before they will start back in the Autumn.

We’re likely to be arranging informal activities on the Monday evenings (lake swims – see below, Bushy intervals or group cycles) to help you with your triathlon fix.

Shepperton lake swims

As you’ll have seen the lake opens this weekend. Alan has been in touch with Hannah to transfer our weekly free swim to Shepperton, starting from next weekend. This will entitle full senior monthly members to one swim on a Sat / Sun / Mon each week. To take advantage, don’t book via the app, instead, turn up and present yourself and Hannah/Sue and their team will check you against our list of members.

 Other race results & previews

Just to wrap up on other results since the last update. Dave Johnson stole the marathon show with a quite sensational 2:49 in Hamburg, the 6th fastest V50. At Boston Nicole ran 3:15 and Maria 3:31. Remarkably they both made it to the start line in London less than 6 days later, running 3:25 & 3:42 respectively. Also Ed 3:06, Duncan 3:12, James 3:37, Chuck, a superb, 3:41, Alice 4:15, Alex & Em 5:41; whilst in Manchester, Angelo recorded 3:04 and Sam 3:14. Lia showed the instant benefits of track, recording a new PB of 50:10 at Victoria Park.

Alex Clarke turned in a superb debut triathlon in Turbo colours, recording a 5:48 over a tough Challenge Gran Canaria course. Also new to Turbo colours and to 70.3 racing, both Gabbie Icmat 5:42 and Becky Mawson 6:19, absolutely smashed their debuts in Venice-Jesolo.

However, Sam Holness had a tough day out in Ironman Texas – hoping he can turn his season around at Roth. We also had 3 Turbos taking on a different sort of triathlon challenge, a XC at the Xterra event at Weston Park on Sunday, Ryan 2:50 just leading Steve home 2:52, with Mark F-S not far behind in 3:21.

Absolutely fabulous to see so many Turbos taking on new and varied challenges – huge congratulations to all.

This Saturday sees the biggest away Turbo contingent outside of Roth for many years, in the Mallorca 70.3. Best of luck to Mark, Matt, Caz, James, Nicole, Sarah, Karen, Steve, Aaron, John (and their hard working support crew). The tracker is now live.

Also in action, Thomas Savage takes on the 100 miles route from Cardiff to Tenby, Thomas Snell the Huntsman 70.3, whilst Holger keeps it local with the Ranelagh half marathon.

The following week sees the European Aquathlon, Aquabike & Middle Distance Tri races in Pamplona, again with a strong Turbo presence (Ian, Pier, Caoimhe, Matt, Gordon & Moira), with Oli, Michele, Tim C, Mark FS, Tim H, Emma H & Dmitri all in 70.3 & IM action.
