A busy spell for Turbos

It’s been a busy spell for Turbos, in terms of competitions and socials.

We said farewell to Linda, rode to Brighton & back, took over Bushy Parkrun pacing, held our DHF aquathlon & BBQ fundraiser, took part in the Ham Lake relays as well as competed all over Europe; whilst the introduction of Ralph’s Sunday night S&C sessions has been very well received.

Results wise, Gail swam the 5.5 mile Coniston End to End in skins, Matt the 3.8km Arun swim, where Sam Pickess finished 7th. Lara & Martin the Dragon Ride, with Charles completing the Dragon’s Devil on the back of what appears to have been no discernible training (Townsend-esque).

Lowri & Scott completed their first triathlons in Turbo colours at Box & the Bridge respectively, where Scott finished 6th overall. Paul Neat was another Turbo debutant at the Dambuster Aquabike, where Maria finished 3rd in her AG in the triathlon, woth the 3rd fastest run of the day.

This weekend saw Turbos battling the heat, Spencer & Dmitrij at Challenge Walchsee and Pier at the World Aquabike Long Distance championships in Pontevedra. Closer to home, Adam turned in 3 solid legs to finish a superb 3rd in the Thorpe Park sprint triathlon.

But arguably it was away from competition that Turbos have had their greatest success.

We had a fabulous turnout out for Linda’s leaving do. A huge thanks to all those who contributed to her thank you present (a substantial John Lewis gift card that will help her settle into her new home).

Thanks to Maria’s efforts, we had the opportunity to take over all the pacing slots at Bushy Parkrun, which gives the club fabulous publicity – and we hope, is set to become an annual event. Thanks to all that gave their time, marshalling, tail walking or pacing. Our positive contributions were noted and appreciated. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DLS3uwztj3c

Thursday saw us host our aquathlons to raise funds for the Dylan Howells Foundation Again a huge thanks to those who volunteered their time to put the event on for the rest of us to enjoy – whether tending the BBQ, the kit sales, timing or marshalling – Dafne & Daisy being standout. It was the best attended aquathlon in my time with the club, with 58 seniors, eclipsing the 35-40 in previous years – and those numbers also reflected in juniors and spectators. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DLfTd1utznX In the senior race, a fabulous swim from new member Josh Young saw him overhaul Atharv and vault up the Club Championship standings.

Friday saw a number of Turbos head to Thames Young Mariners for the Ham Lake Relays, an event put on by Julian Ward to raise money for SOLD. It’s a handicap relay with the Windmilers, where you’re matched with two swimmers (who you may yet to have met) where the aggregate entry times should ensure a close finish – Gail finishing in the winning team. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DLdbsOjN1Pa

Next weekend sees much of the club focus turning to Roth, but we also have Lewis, Dave and Moira heading to Norfolk for the Half Holkham. Go Turbos.

Then on Tuesday 8th July, Caoimhe has stepped up to organise relay teams for Imber Court Relays. Huge thanks here.

A reminder, too, that our nominated Sprint Club Championships are at Dorney on Sun 20th July. Ful-on-Tri are also holding theirs at the same event, so we should be able to have some friendly competition.

Keep up the great work in training and the races will follow – otherwise just join us for the socials. On the topic of socials, please tag @thames_turbo on your posts and we can amplify them – it’s great & simple publicity and allows us to showcase the breadth of activities that all our members get up to.

Hoping you’re surviving the heat (and it’s definitely worth the acclimatisation in case you have to race in similar conditions.
